Color feels like the most obvious thing in the world — red is red, yellow is yellow — until you learn that stop signs used to be yellow, painters once bought ground-up mummies by the tube, and your dog has been squinting at a completely different movie this whole time. Round One: Rules of the Road

Open with the one nobody believes. What color were American stop signs for decades before they were red? Yellow — with black lettering, from the 1920s onward. And the reason is wonderfully practical: red was already the obvious choice, inherited from railroad and traffic signals, but early red pigments and finishes faded badly in the sun. A faded stop sign is a dangerous stop sign, so yellow won on durability. Only in 1954, once fade-resistant red coatings existed, did the stop sign turn the red we now assume is eternal.

Staying at curbside: why are American school buses that exact shade of yellow? Because in 1939 a professor named Frank Cyr gathered educators and transport officials to standardize the country's chaotic bus fleet, and the conference settled on the color now officially called National School Bus Glossy Yellow. The logic: black lettering on yellow is extremely legible in dim dawn light, and yellow grabs your peripheral vision better than nearly anything else. It may be the most successful design decision ever made at a conference.

Round Two: The Price of Paint

Now to the era when color was wealth. In the Renaissance, one blue pigment cost as much as — by some accounts more than — gold. What was it made from? Lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone hauled overland from mines in what is now Afghanistan and ground into ultramarine. It was so precious that painters reserved it for the most important subject in the composition, most famously the robes of the Virgin Mary. A usable synthetic version arrived in the 1820s and crashed the price, which is why the sky in cheap paintings finally got to be properly blue.

Older and stranger still: Tyrian purple, the color of Roman emperors, was extracted from what? Sea snails — murex snails, harvested by the thousands for tiny amounts of dye; by some estimates, around ten thousand snails per gram. That scarcity is the entire reason purple still reads as “royal” to you today.

Bonus round, no charge:

Mummy brown, a pigment sold into the early 20th century, was made from exactly what its name suggests. What did the painter Edward Burne-Jones reportedly do when he found out?

He gave his tube of paint a proper burial in his garden. The pigment really was made from ground Egyptian mummies, and production only ended when the supply ran out.

One modern entry to balance the ledger: in 2009, chemists at Oregon State University discovered a new pigment by accident while heating materials for electronics research. What made YInMn blue headline news? It was the first new inorganic blue pigment in roughly two centuries — proof that even now, a genuinely new color is rare enough to be an event.

Round Three: What the Animals See

Time to dismantle a legend. Does a bull charge because the matador's cape is red? No — cattle are red-green colorblind, so the famous crimson reads as a dull nothing to the bull. It charges at the movement. The cape is red for the audience, and — practically speaking — because it hides stains.

So what does your dog actually see? Not black and white — that's the companion myth. Dogs are dichromats: they see blues and yellows well, but reds and greens collapse into muddy browns and grays. The red ball on green grass that your dog keeps losing? You've essentially thrown a brown ball onto brown grass. Buy blue toys.

Now the other direction — animals that see more than we do. Bees perceive ultraviolet light, and flowers exploit it: many blooms carry UV patterns called nectar guides, landing-strip markings pointing straight at the good stuff, completely invisible to us. The garden is covered in signage you will never read.

Finish with the reigning champion and its plot twist. The mantis shrimp has up to sixteen types of color photoreceptors to our three, which for years fueled claims that it sees a rainbow beyond imagining. What did testing actually find? That mantis shrimp are surprisingly bad at telling similar colors apart — worse than humans. The leading explanation: all those receptors let them identify colors instantly without processing, speed over subtlety. A fitting final answer: the animal kingdom's most decorated eye turns out to be a shortcut, not a superpower.
