Round One: Twelve Seconds at Kitty Hawk

December 17, 1903. How far did the Wright Flyer travel on its first powered flight? Guess a distance. The answer is about 120 feet, in roughly 12 seconds — a hop so short it's less than the wingspan of a modern jumbo jet. The entire first flight in history could have happened, tip to tip, in the shadow of one airplane wing built sixty-some years later.

But the brothers weren't done that morning. They made four flights on the 17th, trading turns, and the last one — with Wilbur at the controls — covered how much more ground? It stretched 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds. In a single windy morning on the Outer Banks, powered flight improved roughly sevenfold. No technology before or since has had a better first day at work.

Now the trap question, and it's a classic. Who first flew the Atlantic nonstop? If you said Charles Lindbergh, you've fallen exactly where the question wants you. British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown flew nonstop from Newfoundland to Ireland in 1919 — eight years before Lindbergh. Lindbergh's 1927 feat was flying it alone (and New York to Paris), which is why he got the ticker-tape parade and Alcock and Brown got trivia questions.

Round Two: The Concorde Round

How fast did Concorde cruise? Around twice the speed of sound — better than 1,300 miles per hour, fast enough to cross from New York to London in about three and a half hours, and on its record 1996 run, in just under three. Flying west, it outran the sun: passengers could leave London after sunset and land in New York in daylight.

Here's the detail that wins the round, though. What physically happened to Concorde's airframe during supersonic flight? It grew. Air friction heated the skin so much that the fuselage stretched by several inches in cruise, then shrank back after landing. The aircraft was designed to breathe like that for its whole career — and at 60,000 feet, close to twice as high as today's airliners, passengers could make out the curvature of the Earth through those tiny windows.

Why are airplane windows round? This one has a body count, so get it right. The de Havilland Comet — the world's first jet airliner — suffered catastrophic in-flight breakups in the 1950s, and investigators traced the failures to metal fatigue, with cracks forming around openings in the pressurized hull. The hard lesson: corners concentrate stress, cycle after cycle of pressurization, until the metal lets go. Rounded windows spread that stress smoothly, which is why every porthole you've ever leaned against is a small memorial to hard-won engineering.

Next: what color is a black box? Bright orange — "international orange," chosen so searchers can spot the recorders in wreckage. And it's really two devices: the flight data recorder tracking what the plane did, and the cockpit voice recorder capturing what the crew said, both armored to survive brutal impact and fire, and both usually mounted in the tail — statistically the part of the aircraft most likely to come through. As for why we call the orange boxes "black," the origin is genuinely murky; nobody can prove a single story, which for a device built to end mysteries is a lovely bit of irony.

Last one. The pioneering flight recorder that led to the modern black box was developed in the 1950s by a scientist named David Warren — from which country? Australia.
